Knitting a Sweater from the Top Down

Top-down knitting—knitting a sweater from the top down—is the most popular knitting direction. The reasons are obvious: You have to cast on fewer stitches, and you can easily try on the sweater as you go. 
That makes it easy to determine the right length for you. Most sweaters from Scandinavia are now knitted from the top down.
